Doritos Is Releasing A Ketchup-Inspired Capsule Collection to Celebrate Canada's Ketchup Chip Obsession
The streetwear collection features six pieces and will be available for five weeks beginning January 31.
Canadians' unbridled love for ketchup-flavored chips is now the inspiration behind a new capsule collection from Doritos. While America is arguably the snack food capital of the world, you’ll be hard-pressed to find ketchup chips in the States. They’re considered a near delicacy up north though, where Canadians are famous for crunching on them as far back as the 1970s. That’s when the now nearly defunct Canadian Hostess Potato Chip brand (currently owned by PepsiCo Canada) first introduced them following a failed line of other “fruit-flavored” potato chips. In recent years, PepsiCo has brought the flavor back through several of its big brands, including a limited-time Doritos release in 2015.
If you were a fan of Doritos’ twist on the coveted favor, you’re in luck. Doritos Canada Ketchup Chips are available once again as part of yet another limited run. To celebrate the chip’s return, the company is launching its first capsule collection beginning this week.
The full range of themed streetwear includes an authentic New Era fitted 59Fifty snapback with Ketchup emblazoned on the front, a classic ketchup red duffle bag, and a Supima cotton tee featuring a ketchup-red Doritos-shaped pocket. You can also get your hands on a lightweight cotton Doritos ketchup micro print tee, fitted crewneck sweatshirt and a satin Varsity-style jacket featuring iconography straight from the Doritos Ketchup package. From the snapback to the letterman, each piece captures a different aspect of that ketchup appreciation life.
“This capsule collection taps into our fans’ love for Doritos Ketchup Chips and gives them a way to show their love for the flavour…quite literally…on their sleeve,” said Shereen Yasseen, Senior Director of Marketing at Frito-Lay Core & Global Brands, PepsiCo Foods Canada.
Pieces cost anywhere from $30 to $145 (CAD) and will be available over the course of five weeks. Unlike other capsule creations, Doritos’ is rolling out each part of its streetwear collection in waves. Beginning Wednesday, January 31, the snapback will be available for purchase at 11 a.m. ET and remain for sale while supplies last. The collection’s other pieces will be released on February 7, 14, 21, and 28, with two items going on sale February 21.
