mkgallery’s Executive Wine Editor Ray Isle chats wine, food and travel with Drew Barrymore at this year’s mkgallery Classic in Aspen.
Hi everybody in the mkgalleryamp; Wine world, I'm Drew Barrymore and I'm at the mkgalleryamp; Wine classic in aspen. I was inspired to make a Pinot Grigio from my trips and travels, but it was also inspired by Pinot Grigio being my first crush, because it's what I drink with my girlfriends. I think what I tried to do is disarm the [UNKNOWN] With my Valley Girl accent and tell them that I am an enthusiast. And I wanna make wines that lack pretension and that are about pleasure. But they don't have to lack complexity and amazing crafting. In Italy I fell in love with like Garda. I really love traveling through the Veneto and the [UNKNOWN] region where some of the finest Pinot Grigio grapes are grown. And there was a particular restaurant, I had a linguine vongole with a glass of Pinot Grigio inside of a cave that we took a boat to. And it was one of those Mental picture. I will remember this moment forever. So you just never know where you're going to find inspiration. The Tokyo food tour I went on, first of all I gained five pounds in three days. I really love ramen so I went and ate every ramen that I could. And the subway station, that was amazing. There's like a little Tokyo ramen row. But what was incredible was when I came home that week I actually went to a restaurant called Ramen Champ by Alvin Kylon and I called him after that and I knew we were doing The Food and Wine Classic in Aspen and I said, Alvin would you ever consider pairing with me with Barrymore Wines? And he was like that is a bucket list dream. I've always wanted to have the opportunity to work there and I love your wine and yes, I will do it and I sent him a bunch of bottles and then he called me and he was like, what about a Japanese breakfast? I'm thinking. It was the most inspired ideas. And I said, will you also do your ramen? Which rivals anything I was lucky enough to eat. In Japan and so I get to eat his ramen today again I'm very excited about that. We worked so hard and produced something that we're incredibly proud of. We don't Give up until we've gotten some place that I think is very artistic and beautiful and there for people to enjoy. [MUSIC]
